MEDIA WATCH: Jonathan Holmes, radical, shocks audience by putting on a necktie

Jonathan Holmes messing with our heads?

As mentioned in the text on the accompanying image, I was thrown so suddenly when I walked into the lounge and beheld Jonathan Holmes wearing a tie, that I hit the floor – fortunately carpeted – bumping my head, and was out like a light that’s just been turned off, or if you’d prefer, a low wattage flouro that just blew.

Well, perhaps that account is not entirely accurate: let’s say I had a frisson-like reaction, and upon recovery was left with a warm fuzzy feeling, but not sufficient to render me incapable of wondering what might have possessed the man to do such a sensible and simple thing; the answer might have something to do with his interviewing of ABC Managing Director Mark Scott, and so Holmes’ boss would likely watch his show tonight; then again, it may have been unrelated.

All I can say is, regardless of the serendipitous intersection of events that had Mr Holmes tying the Windsor Knot (unless he resorts to those elastic looped fakes): Jonathan, please make it a habit, for even though many of us of the hairier gender don’t like the things (we’d prefer to breathe), they are the iconic sign of well dressed men; human psychology will see to it, whether we like it or not, that you will be taken a bit more seriously in your presentation of what at times are – and often fairly so – scourging critiques of the inhabitants of the media jungle.

Who is this professor guy who looks as if he's just got out of bed? Is that the way to treat a charming lady who takes trouble to be professionally neat and smartly dressed?
Do brains equate to untidy grooming?
(Can't read it - brown background on my screen)

(He looks jolly though)

Gladys: Jonathan Holmes is the presenter of a once weekly short critique of the mainly Australian media and their efforts in print, on television, and on radio. It's called Media Watch.

It is an entertaining, always biting, look at the low grade efforts that we are subjected to, the mistakes, the carelessness, the callousness, the anything-for-a-dollarness that so infects the media.

Mr Holmes and his several predecessors over the decades are despised by many of their targets, who would prefer to keep shitting on us in private from up high.

What baffles me is why Mr Holmes so rarely wears a tie, when such a small addition so substantially improves his physical presentation, and by association, his and his team's well researched presentations.

I have been trying to get the video pieces to work. No can do.
Lovely Ms Sales. Beautifully manicured lady.
The brown background is still there for me on this computer, except when I click to make a comment - that piece then turns to champaign. The trouble must be at this end.

Gladys: You have had me baffled over this brown background problem, but I have since learnt that the problem IS NOT at your end!

I have just installed the Safari web browser on my Windows 7 PC, and it loads this Abecedarian Project page just as your Mac system's Safari does, with a brown background below the header picture, and makes it near impossible to read.

My Safari loads my other Fool's Paradise - Infinity on a Shoestring pages successfully with their champagne backgrounds, but I have made another nasty discovery: IE and Opera browsers also load the Abecedarian Project page exactly as does Safari, with the bulk of the page below the header with a dark brown background!

Only Firefox is loading it properly, and Firefox is a minority browser. I have a lot of work to do to fix this up!

Thanks Gladys for letting me know.
PS. All my browsers successfully load the Abecedarian Project's audio files above the postings (they're not videos), so that problem does appear to be at your end.
